Women's Basketball Upended by Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored a game-high 23 points, but the University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a 72-63 Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game to the Adelphi Panthers on Tuesday evening.

With the win, Adelphi is 3-2 with a 2-1 record in conference play. New Haven moves to 2-3 and is 1-2 in the NE-10.

In addition to Bradford's season-high total, Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Chargers. Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) had nine points and seven boards with Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) adding eight points.

A hot shooting opening frame for both teams saw Adelphi take an 18-17 lead at the end of the period. Bradford and Hebert keyed the offense, scoring eight and seven points respectively. The pace slowed in the second period as neither team registered a field goal in the first six minutes of the stanza with the Panthers leading 31-26 at halftime.

A slow start to the third period allowed Adelphi to extend the lead to 47-34 with 2:19 left in the quarter. To close the frame, Bradford rose up for the Chargers, scoring nine points on her own as part of a 12-3 run, cutting the Panthers lead to 50-46 entering the fourth quarter.

In that final frame Adelphi pushed the lead back out to 11 at 61-50 with just under seven minutes left. A 9-0 burst by the Blue and Gold, started by a layup by Smith and capped by a jumper by Kerr chopped the lead to 61-59 with 2:59 to go in the game, but the Panthers pulled away down the stretch to seal the victory.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 28 when it hosts Goldey-Beacom in a non-conference contest at Charger Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 1:30 p.m.
