McDaniels Bucket Lifts New Haven to 59-58 Victory Over Dowling

OAKDALE, N.Y. – In a game that featured 21 lead changes and 10 ties, senior Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) scored a put back in the final seconds to secure a 59-58 victory over the Dowling Golden Lions on Friday afternoon. McDaniels was one of three Chargers who finished in double figures as he finished with 10 points.

Sophomore Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) led all Chargers in the game with a career-high 18 points on 4-of-11 from the field, including a pair of three pointers. Bourke was also a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Rounding out the leading scorers was sophomore Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) who finished with a season-high 12 points with all four of his field goals in the game from outside the three point arc.

As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 36.5 percent on 19-of-52 with seven of those field goals from beyond the arc. The Chargers also connected on 14-of-22 free throw attempts, led by Bourke's perfect afternoon at the line. The individual shooting efforts were spearheaded by sophomore Jayson Cethoute (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and McDaniels who finished 3-of-6 and 4-of-7 from the floor, respectively. Cethoute would finish the game with eight points, while McDaniels led New Haven players with nine rebounds.

Joining McDaniels in the rebounding battles was senior Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) and Cethoute who finished with seven and six rebounds respectively. As a team, New Haven finished with 39 rebounds, compared to 44 for the Golden Lions. Guddemi also led the Blue and Gold with six assists and two blocks.

The Chargers close out a two-game in three-day stretch with a Sunday afternoon matinee against Philadelphia. Opening tip between the Chargers and Rams is set for 3:00 p.m. at Magee Court at the Gallagher Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center. The Chargers will return to Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday, December 2 when they host Southern Connecticut for an NE-10 doubleheader with the women's team.
