Chargers Fall in Five on the Road at Bentley

Waltham, Mass. – The University of New Haven volleyball team dropped a five-set (16-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 13-15) thriller on the road against the Bentley Falcons in the final regular season road game on Friday night. The Chargers fall to 14-13 overall and 6-6 in the Northeast-10, while Bentley improves to 17-8 overall and 10-3 in the NE-10.

Leading the Chargers hitters was junior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with 15 kills and a .172 hitting average with five errors in 58 attempts. She also chipped in 15digs for her 13th double double of the season. Finishing just behind Kennelly was senior outside hitter Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) who finished with 14 kills and a team-best .227 hitting average.

Also among the leading hitters was sophomore middle hitter Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) who finished her first career game with double figure kills recording 10 spikes. Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (8 kills), Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) (6 kills) and Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) (5 kills) also added to the efforts.

As a team, New Haven outhit the Falcons with a combined 60 kills and a .162 hitting percentage. The Chargers best hitting came in the fourth set as they rallied from a five point deficit to score a 25-18 victory and force a fifth set. New Haven finished the fourth set hitting .361 with 15 kills and two errors on 36 attacks. Leading the way individually was Lee and Bussey who each finished without an error with Bussey going a perfect 4-of-4 in hitting efforts. Rios led New Haven with 47 assists, her sixth match of the season with 40 or more assists.

Defensively, the Chargers were led by freshman libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who finished with 28 kills, while adding six assists. Mirmina was one of five players who finished with double figure digs. Along with Mirmina and Kennelly, Lee (9), Rios (18) and Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) (17) rounded out the defensive leaders.

The Chargers return to the friendly confines of Charger Gymnasium to close out the regular season with three-straight matches. First on the schedule will be a visit from the Pace Setters on Tuesday, November 10. First serve in the mid-week battle is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
