MANCHESTER, N.H. – Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) set the New Haven single-game rushing record and
Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) eclipsed the school record for single-season tackles as the University of New Haven football team scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the Saint Anselm Hawks 44-21 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, New Haven is now 7-3 overall and locked up a spot in the Northeast-10 Championship Game next weekend against Assumption in Worcester, Mass. Saint Anselm falls to 2-8.
Anderson finished with 319 yards, breaking Roger Graham's single game rushing record of 304 yards that Graham set against American International on Oct. 15, 1994.
Condit made sure that Anderson wasn't the only one who was breaking records on the day, finishing with 25 tackles, giving him 153 on the year and shattering the previous season best of 134 set by Erik Lesinski in both 1986 and 1987.
After fumbling on its first possession, the Chargers forced a Saint Anselm punt before shifting the offense into gear. A pair of runs gave them a 3rd-and-1 from their own 25 yard line where
Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) kept it himself, rushing for four yards to the 29, giving New Haven a fresh set of downs. Marching down the field, the Blue and Gold did not face another third down until its 12th and final play of drive when Patterson hit
Devin Martin (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) for a 13-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-5 for the opening score of the game. The extra point was blocked as New Haven took a 6-0 lead.
The Hawks responded immediate with a nine play, 75 yard drive, capped by a 51-yard touchdown pass from Eric Fairweather to Kyle Hill to take a 7-6 lead. New Haven once again had trouble holding onto the football on its next series as after a 10-yard pass, the Chargers fumbled again for their second turnover of the half. The defense came up big, however, as on 3rd-and-1 for Saint Anselm inside New Haven territory,
Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) intercepted a ball at the 34 and returned it to the Hawks' 20. That set up Anderson who needed just one play to give New Haven the lead back, scoring his first TD of the game, making it 13-7.
The two teams traded second quarter scores. After the Hawks took the lead on a 47-yard screen pass from Fairweather to Elad Covaliu, New Haven needed just seven plays and three minutes to take the advantage back as Patterson plunged in from one yard out, capping a 56-yard drive. Keying the offense were a 29-yard run by
Lemar Thomas (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) and a 12-yard run by Anderson.
Opening the second half, Saint Anselm took the ball 75 yards on the first drive of the frame, with Fairwather running it in himself to put the Hawks up 21-20. It was the last time they would taste the lead in the game, however, as the Chargers scored 24 unanswered points to come away with the win.

- A turnover set up New Haven's second touchdown of the quarter as Condit intercepted a pass and returned it 48 yards. That play set up a 20-yard touchdown run by Anderson, his first of the day.

It was his third TD of the day, the second time this season he has found the end zone three times in a game.
- His 18-yard run with 9:59 remaining set the New Haven single game record at 313. He would add one more run for six yards to cap his day at 319 rushing yards.
- Following the record-breaking run, Thomas and Justen Wilson (Hamden, Conn./Hyde Leadership) shouldered the majority of the load as the duo combined to carry on six of the final seven plays with Thomas plunging in from five yards out for the final score.
