Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Upended by Yellow Jackets

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –  The University of New Haven men's basketball team got double-doubles from Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) and Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission), but were upended by the American International Yellow Jackets 71-57 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division tilt at Butova Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

AIC improves to 19-5 with the win and moves to 14-4 in the NE-10. New Haven falls to 14-11 overall with a 9-10 conference record.

Anderson led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while McDaniels contributed with 12 points and 12 boards. Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) scored 14 points for the Chargers. Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) also tallied double figures with 12 points.

Cameron Dobbs led all scorers for American International, netting 24 points, hitting on 8-of-11 shots from beyond the arc.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out early as a hot shooting performance by Dobbs, during which he hit five three-pointers in a row, gave AIC a 29-12 lead with 7:43 to go in the first half. The two teams played evenly through the remainder of the opening stanza as the Yellow Jackets took a 41-27 lead into halftime.

In the second half, AIC extended the lead to 59-36 with 11:25 remaining before New Haven started to rally. Layups by McDaniels and Anderson, the latter being a three-point play sliced into the Yellow Jackets lead. A drive and foul by Gillespie followed by two McDaniels free throws cut further into the advantage before a layup by Mosley capped a 12-0 Chargers run and chopped the AIC lead to 59-48 with 7:10 to go in the game. That was as close as New Haven would get, however, as the Yellow Jackets were able to regain composure to cement the final score.

New Haven now is off until Tuesday when it hosts Adelphi in a Senior Day showdown at Charger Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
