BOCA RATON, Fla. –
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) and
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) each hit a two-run home run, but the University of New Haven baseball team was upended by nationally ranked No. 22 Lynn University, 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Fighting Knights improve to 17-5. The Chargers fall to 2-4.
After Lynn scored the initial run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, New Haven rallied with two in the second.
TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) led off the inning with a single. After a pair of strikeouts, Zagaja cracked his first home run of the season down the left field line to put the Chargers on top 2-1. The game remained that way until the bottom of the fourth when Eric Schindler hit a 3-run homer for the Fighting Knights to give them a 4-2 lead.
The Chargers responded in the top of the fifth. With one out,
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) walked. Two batters later, Collett delivered his third home run of the year to knot the game at 4-4.
Still tied in the late innings, Lynn plated a run in the bottom of the eighth on a squeeze bunt to tally the game-winner.
On the mound,
Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford) tossed six innings for New Haven, allowing three earned runs.
The Chargers now return home to start their home schedule with a doubleheader against Franklin Pierce on Saturday, March 21 at 12:00 p.m.
