WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Led by five points by sophomore
Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford), the nationally-ranked No. 6 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team opened its Northeast-10 Conference slate with a 20-1 victory over American International Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field.
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and
Ashley Travis (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette ) also chipped in with hat-tricks, while Campbell added an assist.
The Chargers improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the NE-10. The Yellow Jackets fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the loss.
Campbell also led the team with six draw controls.
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) and
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) both finished with two goals and an assist, while
Alicia Busco (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) came in with two scores. Three others,
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon),
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Lindsay Lare (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), finished with a goal and an assist. Devin Previte and Alex Zapaka rounded out scoring with one goal apiece. Lare and Zapatka both scored their first collegiate goals, while
Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) added her first two collegiate points with a pair of assists.
Along with her two points, Fisher led the Chargers with six ground balls and three draw controls. Szymanski contributed five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Defensively,
Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township) tallied four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Jessica Lawler scored the lone goal for AIC.
In goal, juniors
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) each saw 30 minutes for the Chargers. Alexis Torosian anchored the net for AIC with 15 saves on the day.
The Chargers held a commanding 43-2 advantage in shots and a 30-11 lead in ground balls. UNH also led 14-9 in draw controls and was successful on 9-of-10 clear attempts. With pressure from the Chargers' defense, AIC was held to a 6-of-17 success rate on clear attempts.
The Chargers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first 10 minutes with a pair of O'Brien goals. The lead improved to 9-1 over the next 10 minutes and by halftime, New Haven took a 15-1 lead. O'Brien scored her third of the half with 17 seconds remaining, while Campbell also netted three in the opening period.
New Haven held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the second half and added five more to the scoreboard. Every player on the Chargers' roster saw significant time in the second half, including freshmen Lare, Mazliah and Zapatka who tallied points. Zapatka's first of the season with 4:02 remaining capped scoring as the Chargers secured the 20-1 victory.
The Chargers return to action for a pair of games in Melbourne, Fla. next weekend. New Haven and nationally-ranked LIU Post will play on Saturday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m. on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology. Two days later, the Chargers and Panthers will faceoff at Pirate Stadium with opening draw scheduled for 7 p.m.
