Baseball Rallies Before Falling to Pace

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) had three hits and scored two runs, but the University of New Haven baseball team was upended by the Pace University Setters 5-3 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division contest Wednesday afternoon on the campus of SUNY Purchase.

With the win, Pace improves to 9-10 overall, is 4-3 in the NE-10 and holds a 4-1 record in the Southwest Division. New Haven is now 4-7 overall with a 2-3 conference record and is 2-1 in divisional play.

The Chargers fell behind 4-0 in the first two innings before getting on the board in the third. With two outs, Walraven doubled to rightfield. Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) followed with a double to left-centerfield, plating Walraven to slice the lead to 4-1.

The game remained locked at that score until the eighth when New Haven pulled closer. Walraven got things started again, this time with a single through the right side. Petrillo also singled, moving Walraven to second. Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Walraven to third. A passed ball allowed Walraven to come home to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Setters got a run back in the bottom of the eighth to make it 5-2. In the ninth, the Chargers battled back as Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) lead off with a bunt single. Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) walked, moving O'Reilly to second. Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) singled to load the bases before Nick Russo grounded into a fielder's choice to plate O'Reilly, slicing the lead to 5-3.

Offensively for New Haven, in addition to Walraven's three hits, Petrillo had a pair of hits and an RBI.

The Chargers are back in action on Thursday, April 2 when they will host Concordia in a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
