Softball Upended in Doubleheader by Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team was upended in a pair of games by the Southern Connecticut State University Owls, falling in the opener 2-0 before dropping the second game 6-2 on Friday afternoon.

With the wins, the Owls are now 11-10 overall and hold a 4-3 record both in the NE-10 and the Southwest Division. New Haven falls to 7-10-1 overall and is 4-3 in conference and divisional play.

In game two, New Haven jumped on the board in the first inning as with one out, Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) tripled and then came in to score on a passed ball. Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) followed with a single and moved to third on an error. Marissa Colby (Carlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) followed by sacrificing home DeLeo for a 2-0 Chargers lead.

The Owls responded, however, with four runs in the bottom of the first. The game remained that way until the fourth when SCSU added two more runs to cement the final score.

Offensively in the second game for the Chargers, Schiebe had three hits. In the circle, Alyssa Monteverde (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had her best collegiate game, going 2.1 innings in relief, striking out six of the seven batters she faced.

Game one was a low-scoring contest. The Owls got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third inning before tacking on an insurance run in the sixth.

In the pitcher's duel, Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) allowed just the two runs on three hits, striking out seven.

The Chargers return home tomorrow to square off against Adelphi in a doubleheader. The first game will be the resumption of a suspended game from March 25. The contest will begin with New Haven leading 2-0 in the top of the first inning, with the bases loaded and two out. That game will be followed by the regularly scheduled contest.
