WEST HAVEN, Conn. -
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) tallied six points to go along with five from
Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) as the nationally-ranked No. 8/8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Merrimack 20-4 Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. The Chargers scored the game's first 14 goals and sealed one of their largest victories of the season.
UNH improves to 11-2 overall and 8-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the victory. Merrimack drops to 3-10 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
Campbell scored three goals and handed out three assists to lead the Chargers. O'Brien also recorded a hat-trick with three goals and a pair of helpers.
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) and
Ashley Travis (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette ) both also scored three goals. A trio of Chargers netted two goals -
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon),
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township).
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) totaled three points with one goal and two assists, while
Alicia Busco (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) rounded out scoring with one goal.
Devon Previte (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and
Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) both contributed a pair of assists in the victory.
In goal,
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) recorded the victory in 30 minutes of action to improve her season record to 5-1. She total two saves and one goal against.
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) played the entire second half in the net and also recorded two saves.
Hunter McCarthy led Merrimack with two goals, while Valerie Dayton and Aubrie Stouffer each scored one. Giulia Palombo handed out one assist.
New Haven scored its first goal just 38 second into the opening half when O'Brien scored her first of the afternoon on a free position shot. Over the next 10 minute, New Haven pushed its lead to 9-0. The Chargers' double-digit advantage started at the 18:14 mark of the first half when Campbell scored her second of the game. The UNH lead grew to 14-0 before Merrimack scored its first goal of the contest with 7:01 left in the first half. Szymanski scored her only goal of the afternoon at the 2:22 mark and concluded scoring in the first half.
The Chargers opened an 18-1 lead off a Fisher free-position goal at the 22:33 mark of the second half, it's largest lead of the contest. Merrimack then scored three straight and cut the UNH lead to 18-4 with 5:58 remaining. Ast scored two more for the Chargers in the final four minutes to secure the final margin of victory, 20-4.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 18 when it hosts Bentley at Kayo Field. The game will conclude the Chargers' 2015 regular season home slate and will start at 1 p.m.
