King, DeLeo Lead New Haven to Doubleheader Split

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) struck out seven batters on the afternoon and Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) totaled four hits as the University of New Haven softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader with the Pace Setters, winning game one 2-1 before falling 6-0 in the second contest.

With the split, New Haven is now 11-12-1 overall with an 8-5 conference record and a 6-5 mark in the Southwest Division. Pace is 17-9 and holds a 9-5 record in both the NE-10 and divisional play.

In game one, New Haven got all its runs in the second inning. Marissa Colby (Carlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) singled with one out. DeLeo came up next and doubled into left-centerfield to score Colby and make it 1-0. Two batters later, Nicole D'Andrea (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) delivered an RBI single, extending the lead to 2-0.

Pace drew closer with a run in the sixth inning. In the seventh, New Haven got into a bit of a jam as the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and then moved to third as Shelby Yung singled and moved to second on the throw to third with only one out. After Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) got the second out of the inning on a fly out, King, who had started the game and went the first 5.1 innings, returned to the circle to close out the game. Inheriting a 1-0 count, King worked it to a full count before getting Jeane Drury to fly out to end the game and secure the Chargers win.

King (5-5) earned the victory going 5.2 innings allowing one hit and one run, striking out six.

Game two saw Pace get single runs in the first and third before opening the game up with a three-run fifth.

Offensively, DeLeo went 4-for-5 during the doubleheader with a double and an RBI.

New Haven now heads out on the road for a pair of doubleheaders at Le Moyne this weekend. First pitch on Saturday, April 18 is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
