SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball team got a complete game shutout pitching performance from both
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) and
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) as the Chargers swept a doubleheader from the Le Moyne Dolphins, winning the first game 7-0 before claiming a 1-0 final in the second.
Â
With the wins, New Haven is now 13-14-1 overall, 9-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference and 7-7 in the NE-10 Southwest Division. Le Moyne is 16-11 overall with a 9-8 mark in conference and is 8-6 in divisional play.
Â
In the opener, New Haven scored a run in the third as
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) walked with one out and moved to third on a double by
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville). After an infield single by
Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) loaded the bases,
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) drove home Williams on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Chargers.
Â
New Haven scored again in the fifth as Palase tripled in front of a Schiebe sac fly to make it 2-0. In the sixth
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) and
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) hit back-to-back doubles, extending the lead to 3-0. The Chargers broke the game open in the seventh as singles by Williams, Palase and Schiebe loaded the bases for Childs, who delivered a two-run single. Three batters later, DeLeo doubled down the leftfield line to plate Schiebe and Childs, pushing the lead to 7-0 New Haven.
Â
The run support was plenty enough for King (6-6) who allowed just four hits and struck out nine in completing her third shutout of the season.
Â
Game two was a much different contest as Cabral and Alexis Eastman held their respective opponent's offenses down for six innings. The Chargers broke through in the seventh as
Marissa Colby (Carlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) led off with a single and moved to second on a DeLeo sacrifice bunt.
Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After a pop-out,
Nicole D'Andrea (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) grounded a ball back to the circle. The throw to first was wide allowing Colby to score the only run of the game.
Â
Cabral (7-6) picked up her third shutout of the season, allowing two hits and striking out seven.
Â
Offensively in the doubleheader, Palase had four hits, while DeLeo and Childs each drove in three runs.
