No. 8 Chargers Upset No. 1 Adelphi, 10-5

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Anchored by 14 saves from Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) and a defense that held the nation's top offense to five goals, the nationally-ranked No. 8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated No. 1 Adelphi 10-5 Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown and one of the biggest wins in program history. The upset snapped a 36-game winning streak by the Panthers who had not been defeated since May 18, 2013.

With the win, New Haven improves to 13-2 overall and 10-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Adelphi drops to 14-1 overall and 11-1 in conference play. With other results, the Chargers move into sole possession of third place in the conference standings with one game left in the regular season.

The win was the Chargers' first-ever over the nation's top-ranked team and the first in 20 attempts against the Panthers. Entering the game, UNH had suffered 19-straight losses to Adelphi. Averaging over 17 goals per game prior to Wednesday's contest, the Panthers were held to the fewest goals scored since scoring just four against then-C.W. Post in the national semifinal on May 15, 2008. The last time the Panthers were held to five-or-fewer goals in a regular season contest was April 3, 2005 against Stonehill. The Chargers were also the first visiting team to win in Garden City since April 28, 2012.

Gianotti finished with a career-high 14 saves with a just five goals against. Offensively, Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) led the team with five total points off three goals and two assits. Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) added three goals, while Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and Ashley Travis (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette ) each tallied two scores. Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) dished out two assists and Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) rounded out scoring with an assist.

The Chargers fell behind 3-0 in the first seven minutes Wednesday afternoon. The 3-0 run to open the contest was split in two by a 45-minute lightning delay. O'Brien opened scoring for the Blue and Gold at the 23:07 mark. A 10-minute stretch was scoreless before the Panthers pulled ahead 4-1 with 11:14 on the clock. Travis and Campbell scored in the final 11 minutes for the Chargers who narrowed the lead to 4-3 at halftime.

Just 2:19 into the second half, Fisher found O'Brien for her second of the afternoon to even the game at 4-4. Over the next 13 minutes, the Chargers put the game away with another four unanswered goals to take an 8-4 lead with 15:21 remaining. Adelphi added one at the 14:36 mark to break the UNH streak. Campbell added two more in the final four minutes to secure the UNH victory.

The Chargers, currently third in the Northeast-10 Conference standings, will conclude there regular season on Saturday, April 25 at Franklin Pierce. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m. in Rindge, N.H. UNH has also clinched one of the top four seeds in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship and will host the opening round on Wednesday, April 29.
