PURCHASE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven baseball team got standout pitching from
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) and
Brian Caselli (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) and scored all the runs it needed for the game in the sixth inning as the Chargers upended the Pace University Setters 2-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game on the campus of SUNY Purchase on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, New Haven is now 14-12 overall with a 9-8 record in the NE-10 and is 9-6 in the Southwest Division. Pace is now 17-17 overall with a 9-8 conference mark and is 9-6 in divisional play.
New Haven broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning as
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) led off with a single.
Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) came up next and doubled into left-centerfield, plating Zagaja to make it 1-0. A sacrifice bunt by
Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) moved Tammaro to third.
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) came up next a drove in Tammaro with a groundout, making it 2-0 Chargers.
Pace scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Royer was able to shut down the frame, getting Michael Gulino to fly out with the tying run on base, preserving the lead.
Royer (3-1) was superb, allowing just one run on six hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking none.
Brian Caselli (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) came in to begin the eighth and retired all six batters he faced for his second save of the year.
Offensively,
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) and
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) each went 2-for-4 with Petrillo collecting a double.
The Chargers are in action next on Wednesday, April 29 when they take on non-conference foe Dominican (N.Y.) at Frank Vieira Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
