No. 7/8 Chargers Defeat Owls, 20-7

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored a game-high five points to lead the nationally-ranked No. 7/8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a 20-7 victory over crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. Fisher tied her season-best output of four goals and one assist.

With the victory, New Haven improved to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Owls fall to 2-8 overall and 1-7 in NE-10 play.

Fisher added three draw controls and two ground balls to lead the Blue and Gold. Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) also recorded five total points with three goals and two assists, while added three draw controls and a caused turnover. Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) (2g, 2a) and Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) (3g, 1a) each tallied four points. Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and Ashley Travis (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette ) both finished with three goals. Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) scored one and handed out two assists, while Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), Lindsay Lare (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) and Devon Previte (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) each finished with one point. Additionally, Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township) and Alicia Busco (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) helped lead the team with three ground ball.

Goalkeepers Alyssa Gianotti and (Monkton, Md./Hereford)Marissa McDermott# split time between the pipes for UNH. Gianotti stopped three shots, while McDermott totaled two saves. Gianotti recorded the win and moved to 4-1 on the season.

Nicole Healy led Southern Connecticut State with two goals and an assist.

The Chargers led in nearly every statistical category with a 36-18 lead in shots and a 20-16 advantage in ground balls. UNH also held a 19-9 lead in draw controls and turned the ball over four fewer times (17-13). New Haven was successful on 12-of-13 clear attempts, while forcing SCSU to fail on five of 16 clear attempts.

The Chargers rushed out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of goals from Travis in the first 14 minutes of the opening half. The Owls got on the board at the 15:42 mark to cut the lead to 4-1. Three more unanswered goals pushed the New Haven lead to six with 13:02 on the clock. In the final 12 minutes of the first half, Southern Connecticut State managed two goals compared to four by the Chargers who held an 11-3 lead at the intermission.

New Haven scored the first six goals of the second half and put the game away for good. Mazliah scored the first of three goals in the final minutes at the 21:39 mark and gave the Chargers their largest lead of the afternoon, 17-3. The teams exchanged points in the final 20 minutes and the Chargers secured the win by a final score of 20-7.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when it travels to Assumption for another NE-10 showdown. Game time in Worcester, Mass. is set for 1 p.m.
