SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) had two hits including a home run and three RBI, but the University of New Haven baseball team fell to the American International Yellow Jackets 12-5 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game on Friday afternoon.
With the win, AIC is now 16-19 overall with an 11-8 record in the NE-10 and is 9-7 in the Southwest Division. New Haven is 15-13 with a 9-9 conference record and is 9-7 in divisional play.
Things started off well for the Chargers who plated a run in the first inning.
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) doubled and was singled home two batters later by
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) for a 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored two in the third on an Alex LaFayette homer and added another in the fifth to go up 3-1.
New Haven scored a two out run in the sixth as
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) doubled and came in to score on a fielding error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Petrillo. AIC opened things up in the bottom of the inning, however, scoring seven times to take a 10-2 lead.
In the eighth, the Chargers got three of the runs back as a single by Walraven and a double by Petrillo put two men on for Cullen who blasted his third home run of the season over the wall in left to cut the lead to 10-5. The Yellow Jackets tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning to close the scoring in the game.
New Haven closes its regular season tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at AIC. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
