Baseball Falls to Adelphi in NE-10 Championship

WEST HAVEN, Conn.,- The University of New Haven baseball team saw its 2015 season conclude Friday afternoon with a 7-2 loss to Adelphi in an elimination game in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship at Frank Vieira Field.

The Chargers finish the season at 17-16 overall, while the Panthers improve to 20-20 and advance to take on the loser of Franklin Pierce and Stonehill later Friday afternoon in the second elimination game.

Adelphi jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Chargers managed just three base runners in the first six innings and the Panthers added three more runs off four hits and an error in the top of the sixth.,

Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) sparked a UNH rally in the seventh with a leadoff single to left center. After a double from Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) put runners on second and third, Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) drove a one-out single to right center field to score a pair of Charger runs and bring the lead within three.

The Panthers gained further separation in the top of the eighth with three hits and one UNH error which produced two more runs and a 7-2 Adelphi lead. The Chargers were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth and managed one base runner in the bottom of the ninth, but could not muster another run.

Cullen went 2-for-4 with a run scored at the plate, while Russo went 2-for-2 with a run scored.

On the mound, David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) went five innings with five earned runs and eight hits. Brian Caselli (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) threw three innings in relief allowing two earned runs and striking out a pair. Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School) pitched the final inning and allowed just one hit while fanning one as well.
