Waltham, Mass. – Sophomore Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) came through under pressure with a 34-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to lead the New Haven Chargers football team to a 22-21 road victory over the Bentley Falcons in the Northeast-10 opener. With the victory, the Chargers improve to 1-1 overall and secure a position at the top of the conference standings early in the year.
Junior quarterback Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) came up big for the Chargers in the second half as he finished 11-of-20 over the final 30 minutes for 161 yards in the air. For the game, Patterson completed 16 passes for 191 yards. Junior running back Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) also had a big game for the Chargers, rushing for 140 yards, the first 100-plus game of the season for any Charger, and grabbed six yards in the air. Anderson also finished with a pair of rushing touchdowns, while graduate student Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) added a touchdown on the ground, running for 56 yards. As a team, the Chargers finished with 418 total yards of offense, 202 yards in the air and 216 on the ground.
Defensively, New Haven was led by Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) for the second game in a row as he finished with 15 total tackles, six solo stops and nine assisted tackles. Among his 15 total tackles were three for loss, driving the Falcons back 14 yards. Overall, the Chargers finished with 10 tackles for a total of 37 loss yards, including a pair of seven yard drawbacks for graduate student Drake Harris (Union, N.J./Union) and junior Dave Calderon (Neptune, N.J./Neptune).
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
· Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) capped off a 90 yard drive with a one-yard run to put the Chargers on the board first. That drive included another long run for junior Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) who broke through for 69 yards to put UNH in a first and goal position.
· Anderson closed out the first quarter with 76 yards on the ground, while also collecting one pass for 11 yards. In addition to his touchdown, Officer finished the first quarter with 12 yards on the ground.
· Defensively, Drake Harris (Union, N.J./Union) and Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) led the Chargers with four and three tackles respectively. Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) also among the defensive leaders with two tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
· Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) collected his first score on the ground in 2015 when he scampered in from one yard out with that touchdown coming in the final 30 seconds of the half.
· Earlier in that scoring drive, Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) kept the drive alive when he broke free for 29 yards on a third and long play. Overall, the Chargers second scoring drive went for nine plays and 62 yards in 2:07.
· Officer and Anderson led the Chargers rushing game in the second quarter finishing with 38 and 39 yards, respectively.
· Junior Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) took over behind center in the second quarter, finishing with five complete passes in eight attempts for 31 yards in the air. The longest of those throws went for 19 yards to DeeJay White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay / Bowling Green State University). He also completed an 11 yard pass to tight end Jonathan Badyna (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) during the Chargers scoring drive.
· Defensively, Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) led the Chargers with five total tackles, including one that resulted in a seven yard loss. Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) joined Condit in leading the team with four total tackles.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
· Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) completed a 12 play, 87 yard drive to pull the Chargers within two with just under five minutes remaining.
· Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) came up big in the air during the Chargers first scoring drive, completing four passes for 75 total yards, including a pair of 19 yard passes to Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History). The second of those completions to Headen came in a critical fourth down possession and left the Chargers with a first down at the one yard line.
· Patterson took the reins in the final drive when he finished with four complete passes and a crucial run for 11 yards on a fourth and three to put New Haven in striking distance for kicker Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge).
· Stock calmly drilled his third field goal of the season through the uprights from 34 yards out to secure the victory for the Chargers.
