Ashley Dawson (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) and
Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) scored 13 minutes apart in the second half as the University of New Haven women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win against the Le Moyne Dolphins in a Northeast-10 Conference match at Kayo Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Chargers are now 4-0 on the season with a 1-0 record in the NE-10. The win was also the 50th at New Haven for head coach
Laura Duncan. Le Moyne falls to 1-2 overall with a 0-1 conference mark.
Trailing 1-0 in the 65th minute, New Haven netted the equalizer as Dawson received a ball from Garcia just outside the 18-yard box and lofted it towards the top right corner. The Dolphins keeper leapt to meet the ball, but came up just shy as the ball crept just under the crossbar to tie the match at 1-1.
In the 78th minute, Garcia took a pass from
Allison Morgan (Raritan, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) just inside the top of the box and followed Dawson's lead, chipping the ball over the keeper's head for her fourth goal of the season.
Le Moyne tallied their lone marker on a free kick by Kelly Ristoff from 20 yards out.
Overall, New Haven had a 20-11 advantage in shots and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Following the match, the women's soccer team dedicated a new flagpole at Kayo Field in honor of Corporal John Dawson, the brother of
Ashley Dawson (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge), who tragically lost his life in Afghanistan this past April as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
New Haven is next in action on Wednesday, when they head to Garden City, N.Y. to square off in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt against Adelphi. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
