The University of New Haven women's tennis team suffered a narrow 5-4 loss Sunday afternoon to American International College at the Cullman Heyman Tennis Center.
The Chargers fall to 0-3 overall and in the Northeast-10 Conference. American International moves to 1-2 on the season with a 1-1 conference mark.
In doubles play, freshman Kristen McCormick (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) and senior Angelica Pecci (Watertown, Conn./Holy Cross) rallied against Eleanna Fulop and Whitney McKay to a nail-biting 9-7 defeat. In third doubles play, freshman twin sister duo Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) earned a win by default.
In singles play, the Burridge sisters each secured the first singles win of their collegiate tennis careers. In No. 4 singles play, Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) defeated Whitney McKay in two consecutive 6-2 sets. In fifth singles, Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) also shined, shutting out Callie Porcher 6-0 in the first set, and rounded out the win in a 6-2 second set. Freshman Brittany Kennedy (Wolcott, Conn./Saint Paul Catholic High School) also won in a walkover in No. 6 singles.
The next University of New Haven tennis match will take place on the road in Garden City, N.Y. where the Chargers will take on the Panthers of Adelphi University in another NE-10 matchup. The opening serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
