Women's Soccer Returns to Winning Form Against Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team returned to its winning ways as the Chargers defeated the Saint Michael's Purple Knights 1-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Chargers are now 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in the NE-10. The Purple Knights drop to 1-5-1 overall and are 0-4 in conference.

After a scoreless first half that saw New Haven hold a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal, Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) broke through in the 68th minute. Coming clear from 25 yards out, she unleashed a rocket that found the back of the net in the upper right corner for a 1-0 Chargers lead. For the senior, it was her fifth goal of the season.

The Blue and Gold continued to apply pressure, registering seven shots in the final 22 minutes of the contest. Overall, it held a 20-13 advantage in shots including a 10-3 margin in attempts on net as well as a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) made three saves to record her first win of the year and her 10th clean sheet (9th solo) in a Chargers uniform.

New Haven returns to the pitch on Saturday when it travels to Bentley for a Northeast-10 Conference contest beginning at 12:00 p.m.
