Tennis Shuts Out Franklin Pierce with 9-0 Sweep

The University of New Haven women's tennis team never let up Tuesday afternoon as they earned their first win of the season with three points in doubles action and six points in singles action to shut out Franklin Pierce University in a 9-0 victory. With a dominating first win of the season, New Haven improves to 1-5 overall and in the Northeast-10 conference. The Ravens drop to 0-5 on the year. 

Senior Angelica Pecci (Watertown, Conn./Holy Cross) and freshman Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) came out strong with an 8-4 victory in No. 1 doubles over Sonia Rodrigues and Kara Brazel. Both also won singles competition, with Pecci taking a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kirby Melbourne, and Varrone securing her win over Nicole Gilooly with 7-5 and 6-2 victories. Junior Sarah Burzin (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) and freshman Kristen McCormick (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) teamed up for a 9-7 win in second flight doubles over Melbourne and Nicole Gilooly, and senior Alex Sharshakov and freshman Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) defeated Alexia Dasilva and Lyla Austin with a score of 8-1. 

In first flight singles, Sharshakov downed Sonia Rodrigues in two consecutive 6-0 sets. Kristen McCormick (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) earned a win over Kara Brazel with scores of 4-6, 7-6, and a 10-4 tiebreaking set in No. 2 singles. Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) captured her first career singles win against Shelli Safran, taking a 3-6, 6-0, and 10-4 victory. Sarah Burzin (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) rounded out singles action in No. 6 singles, earning a pair of 6-3 wins against Alexa Dasilva.

After a solid team win for New Haven, the Chargers return to action on Sunday, September 27 when they will travel to Waltham, Mass. where they will battle the Falcons of Bentley University in another NE-10 matchup. Match time is set for 12 p.m.
