WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting rival Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the defeat, the Chargers fall to 3-4 overall in 2015 and 0-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Owls even their record at 3-3, while improving to 2-1 in the league.
The squads played a scoreless first half with the visitors marking a barrage of attempts on the Chargers keeper Stephen Sasso (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) in the early minutes. Southern Connecticut strung together four shots in the first 5:40 of the game, with three of those attempts forcing Sasso into action.
The Chargers would turn the tide late in the half, pressuring the Owls keeper Daniel Prendergast with a pair of attempts within a one minute span. The first of those opportunities came from Robin Faassen (Hoensbroek, Netherlands/Leeuwenborgh) in the opening seconds of the 42nd minute. His blast from 24 yards deflected off an Owls defender as he put himself in the way of the shot to protect the scoreless draw.
The second attempt was also recorded as a team save, as a point blank attempt from Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) drilled a shot 54 seconds later that an Owls defender kick saved over the top of the net, setting up a second Chargers corner kick.
Coming out of the intermission, the Chargers had the first opportunity in the second half with a shot from Frank Norosky (Groton, Conn./Fitch) coming just over eight minutes into the second half. That shot came as attempt to score opposite corner from left to right with the ball just barely missing the right post and trickling over the end line.
The Owls first attempt in the second half came 15 minutes into the action when a blast from Christian Samaniego that Sasso made a great punch save, clearing the ball to protect and ending the threat. Southern Connecticut then broke the scoreless draw seconds into the 65th when Louis Greenway Tambini (Nottingham, England/Trinity School) took advantage of a misplayed clear attempt by Sasso, finishing off the forward pass from Tyler Naef with a chip shot over the end line.
The Chargers looked to tie the game late in the second half when they were awarded a free kick with 90 seconds remaining. The attempt by Faassen wrapped around the Owls wall but found the hands of the Southern Connecticut keeper, Prendergast.
The Chargers will return to action on Saturday, September 26 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. for a date with the Assumption Greyhounds. Opening kickoff in the Northeast-10 match-up is scheduled for 7 p.m.Â
