Garcia Scores Twice Late as Women's Soccer Stuns Franklin Pierce

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) scored twice in the final six minutes of play as the University of New Haven women's soccer team stunned the Franklin Pierce Ravens 2-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference overtime thriller on Wednesday afternoon.

With the victory, New Haven is now 6-2-1 with a 3-2-1 record in the NE-10. The Ravens are now 4-3 overall with a 2-3 conference mark.

Trailing 1-0 following a penalty kick goal in the 79th minute by Natalia Maria da Silva, the Chargers responded nearly immediately as a shot by Garcia in the 81st minute went just inches outside the post. A little less than five minutes later, she tallied the equalizer, taking a through ball from Taylor Szyarto (Howell, N.J./Howell) and delivering it into the top right corner of the net.

Less than a minute into the overtime session, Carlie Schecht (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made a run coming down the left side before passing the ball to Ashley Dawson (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge). Dawson centered the ball for Garcia who caught up to the ball past a pair of defenders and tapped the ball past the keeper for the game winner.

The battle that ensued to get to the final result was a tightly fought one. New Haven controlled the first half, holding a 10-5 advantage in shots. Franklin Pierce made significant halftime adjustments, and came out firing, recording 12 of the first 14 shots of the half. Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) was up to the task, however, making a career-high 14 saves.

The Chargers held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

New Haven returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 3 when it travels to cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State for a Northeast-10 Conference contest beginning at 6:00 p.m.
