WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior running back Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) finished with 78 yards receiving and 85 yards on the ground, leading the University of New Haven Chargers in a season opening loss to reigning PSAC Champion Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Anderson's 78 yard reception came out of the cannon of Shazzon Mumphrey (Louisville, Ky./Waggener) who finished his first game for the Blue and Gold with 136 yards in the air.
Junior Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) also saw some time under center for second-year Head Coach Chris Pincince, finishing with 83 yards, going 6-of-16. Joining Anderson in leading the Chargers on the ground was Mumphrey who finished with 52 yards and sophomore Justen Wilson (Hamden, Conn./Hyde Leadership) who chipped in 26 yards running.
In the air, Anderson was joined by junior Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View) who finished with four catches for 68 yards, including a 33-yard haul, and graduate student DeeJay White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay / Bowling Green State University) who pulled in three passes for 37 yards.
Defensively, New Haven was led by senior captain Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) who finished with 19 tackles, including six solo stops. Two other Chargers finished with double digit tackles, sophomore Stefano Bicknese (Somers, N.Y./Somers / USMAPS) and graduate student Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) who finished with 12 and 11 tackles, respectively. Condit's six solo tackles led the way, with senior Tarik Pusey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln / Rhode Island) and graduate student Jacob Weaver (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) joining him with six solo stops apiece.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
· On the Chargers opening drive, Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) showed off his speed on just the second play of the drive when he sprinted 71 yards downfield, his first of two 70-yard plays of the afternoon.
· Defensively, New Haven held Slippery Rock scoreless on four possessions in the first quarter, including a pair of four-and-out stands. Over the first 15 minutes, a trio of Chargers finished with three tackles apiece; Tarik Pusey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln / Rhode Island), Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and Stefano Bicknese (Somers, N.Y./Somers / USMAPS).
· New Haven opened up the scoring on its third drive of the afternoon, which started at the Chargers 31-yard line. Included in that drive was a 33-yard reception for Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View) that gave UNH its second first down of the drive.
· The lone score of the opening quarter came off the boot of sophomore Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) who drilled a 25-yard attempt straight through the uprights. The full drive for the Chargers was 10 plays for 61 yards and took 4:33.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
· New Haven's second scoring drive of the afternoon took just five plays to complete with Shazzon Mumphrey hooking up with Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) for a 78-yard second down pass. Overall, the scoring drive took just 1:53 and went 91 yards.
· All but seven of the Chargers second quarter offensive yardage came out of the air, highlighted by the touchdown pass to Anderson. Overall, the Chargers finished 96 passing yards in the second quarter.
· Defensively, the Chargers were led by Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) who each finished with six tackles. Highlighting the defense in the second quarter was an interception on the final play of the half as Nigel Davis (Williamsville, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute) picked off The Rock's Dante Nania at the goal line. Davis would gain 33 yards after the interception as the clock expired.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES
· New Haven cut into a two-touchdown Slippery Rock lead with the second field goal of the afternoon from Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), this his longest of the afternoon, a 33-yard attempt. That score capped off a 10-play 47-yard drive that took 2:58.
· The Chargers again capitalized in the air, finishing with 66 passing yards and 13 yards on the ground. Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) picked up the duties behind center in the third quarter, collecting all 66 yards, while Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View) finished with a pair of catches for 27 yards.
· Defensively, Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) led the Chargers for the third-straight quarter as he racked up seven tackles.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
· New Haven extended its running game in the fourth quarter, finishing with 35 total yards on the ground, led by Justen Wilson (Hamden, Conn./Hyde Leadership) who finished with 26 yards on five carries.
· Behind center for the second-straight quarter, Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) finished with 17 yards in the air, while he also rushed three times for nine yards.
· Stefano Bicknese (Somers, N.Y./Somers / USMAPS) stepped up defensively in the final 15 minutes, leading the Chargers with four tackles. Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) finished just behind him with three stops.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
· Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), a College Football USA All-American Honorable Mention last season, collected a game-high 19 tackles to lead the Chargers Defense. Condit's 19 tackles is the 10th time he has registered double figure tackles and his fifth-straight game with 10 or more, dating back to 2014.
· The Chargers had a pair of 70-plus yard plays in their season opener, both with Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) providing the footwork. His first 70-yard play came on the ground as he sprinted for 71 yards, while he hauled in a 78-yard pass for a touchdown in the second quarter. Those 70-plus yard plays were the longest for UNH since Anderson ran 88-yards for a touchdown against Merrimack on October 25, 2014.
