WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team forced 27 Assumption turnovers, but the Chargers were upended by the Greyhounds 63-54 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
Â
With the win, Assumption is 11-5 overall with a 7-4 record in the NE-10. New Haven is 7-9 with a 3-7 conference mark.
Â
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) led New Haven with 24 points, her fourth consecutive 20+ point effort. It is the first time since February of 2013 that a women's basketball player has netted 20 or more in four straight games. She also tied a career-high with nine rebounds for the second game in a row.
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) joined Bradford in double figures with 12 points, while
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) chipped in seven points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Â
A slow shooting start forced the Chargers to fight out of a hole early. After converting the first two free throws of the game, the Blue and Gold saw Assumption go on a 19-1 run that spanned into the second period. New Haven battled back, hitting 8-of-15 shots, keyed by nine first half points from Bradford to climb back to 22-16 before heading into the locker room at halftime trailing 29-20.
Â
To open the third period, Assumption scored the first six points before the Chargers made their move going on a 17-9 run, cutting the lead to 44-37 entering the final quarter. The spurt was keyed by six points from Kerr and included New Haven scoring the final five points of the stanza.
Â
In the fourth, the Chargers sliced the lead to four on a pair of occasions before finally breaking the barrier on a jumper in the lane by Hebert cut the lead to 48-46. The Greyhounds scored the next four points to pump the lead back to six. A trio of free throws by Bradford pulled the Blue and Gold back to 52-49, but that was as close as it would get as Assumption hit on 6-of-6 free throws in the final 67 seconds.
Â
New Haven is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when it hosts Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. Tipoff from Charger Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
