Peduzzi and Poirier Net Goals as Chargers Drop Heartbreaker at Saint Rose in Double OT

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team (5-6-1, 2-5-1 NE-10) battled back from a two goal deficit to tie the game and force double overtime before falling on a golden goal in the 108th minute against the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Tuesday night.

HIGHLIGHTS

·        Freshman Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) scored his fourth goal of the season to put the Chargers on the board and cut the deficit in half heading into the halftime intermission. Peduzzi's goal came as he took advantage of defensive miscommunication in front of the goal and headed home the first New Haven tally of the day.

·        Senior strike Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) then tallied the game-tying goal in the 58th minute when he connected with Pablo Perez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) to score his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The assist for Perez is his team-leading sixth of the year.

·        Following Poirier's game-tying goal, the Chargers defense fought off seven shots over the final 22 minutes of the second half, including an attempt with 32 seconds remaining in regulation that forced freshman keeper Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) into action, forcing overtime.

·        After a scoreless first overtime frame in which just one shot was taken between the two squads, New Haven fought of a barrage of shots by the Golden Knights in the second extra frame, including three that came within a three minute span. The game-winning tally for Saint Rose came as Ryan Rooney converted a penalty kick in the 108th minute.

·        Lorusso matched his career-high of 11 saves for the fourth time this season, facing a total of 26 shots taken by the Golden Knights.

·        Overall, the Chargers took just eight shots in the match with both of their goals the only two from the Blue and Gold that were registered as shots on goal. The Golden Knights keeper finished without a save on the evening.

·        Poirier's goal came on a team-high three shots as the remaining five shots from New Haven came from different players which along with Peduzzi included Perez, George Tighe (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Boys College) and Ben Lamb (Keighley, England/Oakbank).
