WEST HAVEN, CONN. – The University of New Haven volleyball team (10-5) improved to 5-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference with a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-21, 25-23) of the visiting Saint Rose Golden Knights on Tuesday night at Charger Gym. Leading the way for New Haven was freshman libero Charleigh Crews (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) who finished with a career-high 24 digs, while adding five assists.
HIGHLIGHTS
· New Haven opened the match in impressive fashion, rattling off a string of seven straight points during Crews first serve of the night. That rally provided a 10-1 lead for the Chargers and they never looked back in that opening set. During that rally, three different players all put down at least two kills, while Crews also served up the first ace of the night.
· Offensively, senior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) finished with a match-high 15 kills, her sixth match over the last seven in double figures. She closed out the night with a .306 hitting average with four errors in 36 attempts.
· Joining Kennelly in leading the team was freshman Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who finished with 10 kills, her fifth match of the season in double figures. Rounding out the leaders offensively was Nicole Morales (Moca, Puerto Rico/Carib Christian) who finished with nine.
· Running the Chargers offense for the night was a pair of setters, senior Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) and sophomore Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef). Of the duo, Hacker led the way with 24 assists, while Rios finished with 17 to go along with seven kills.
· Joining Crews in leading the Chargers defensively was Rios who chipped in 14 digs and Kennelly who rounded out a double double with 10 defensive stops.
· Kennelly and junior Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) led the Blue and Gold with two blocks apiece.
