Martins' 14 Kills Leads Chargers to Three Set Sweep of So. New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H.The University of New Haven volleyball team (13-6, 8-1 NE-10) secured its third straight, and 11th of the season, three-set sweep, defeating Southern New Hampshire (25-16, 25-14, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. Leading the Chargers was Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) who finished with 14 kills, her fourth straight match with double digit kills

HIGHLIGHTS

·         The 14 kills for Martins is her sixth match in double figures as she was the only New Haven player to finish with 10 or more. The junior closed out the day with a .500 attack percentage, suffering just two errors in 24 total attempts.

·         Joining Martins in leading the Blue and Gold was junior middle Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) who finished with eight kills and a .429 average. In 14 attempts, Bussey finished with two errors.

·         As a team, New Haven combined for 48 kills with just 10 errors in 100 attempts for a .380 average. Also joining in the hitting efforts was Nicole Morales (Moca, Puerto Rico/Carib Christian) who chipped in seven kills, while Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) and Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) each added six.

·         Marshaling the Chargers offense on the day were a pair of setters, Rios who led the way with 21 assists and Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) who added 18.

·         Defensively, New Haven was led by senior Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with 18 digs, the only player in double figures. Joining her in leading the way was Charleigh Crews (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) with nine digs and Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who had eight defensive stops.

·         As a team, New Haven combined for five total blocks led by Bussey who finished with four total, all solo blocks.

·         The Chargers also combined for six service aces, led by Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) who finished with three.

The Chargers next two games will come in the friendly confines of Charger Gymnasium as they return to West Haven for back-to-back games. First on the docket will be a visit by the AIC Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, November 1 with a 7:00 p.m. opening serve.
