BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – The University of New Haven volleyball team (6-5, 2-0 NE-10) dropped a non-conference match against Bridgeport University on Thursday evening, falling in four sets (22-25, 29-31, 25-19, 24-26). Leading the Chargers was sophomore setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who finished with her third triple double of the season with 11 kills, 20 assists and 17 digs while hitting .303 for the match.
HIGHLIGHTS
· Rios' 11 kills is her fourth match of the season with double figure kills, while she has now recorded a triple double in each of the last three matches she has put down 10 or more kills.
· Joining Rios in leading the Chargers was junior Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and freshman Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who each finished with 12 kills. The 12 kills for Nowicki represents her third straight match with double digit kills.
· Among the three leading hitters, Rios led the way with a .303 hitting average with just one error in 33 total attempts. As a team, The Chargers finished the match hitting .187 with 56 kills and 25 errors among 187 attacks.
· Rios' 20 assists was tied with senior setter Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) for the team high, while as a team the Chargers finished with 49 total assists among their 56 kills. Hacker also added a pair of service aces among eight total for the Blue and Gold.
· Defensively, the Chargers were led by Rios' 17 digs, while libero Charleigh Crews (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) (15) and Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) (14) each joined her in double figures.
· UNH combined for eight total aces in the match, led by Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) who finished with three.
· As a team, the Chargers combined for 10 total blocks, led by Bussey who finished with seven total. Nowicki followed just behind her with six.
