Women's Volleyball Sweeps Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After a tight first set, the University of New Haven women's volleyball team shifted into high gear as the Chargers came away with a straight set 25-22, 25-14, 25-12 victory in a Northeast-10 Conference match against the Merrimack Warriors. With the win, New Haven is now 7-5 overall and 3-0 in the NE-10. 

HIGHLIGHTS

·         Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) led the Chargers with a double-double behind 10 kills and 18 assists. She also had eight digs and did not commit an error, helping her to a .556 hitting percentage. 

·         Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) had 12 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. She also contributed nine blocks in the contest, the third straight match and fourth time this season she has accumulated seven or more blocks. 

·         Charleigh Crews (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) helped lead New Haven defensively, tying Rios for the team lead with eight digs. 

·         Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) tied Rios with 18 assists to lead the team.

·         The Blue and Gold had a team hitting percentage of .452 in the third set on the strength of 15 kills and just one error in 31 attempts. Overall, the Chargers hit .297 for the match and committed just nine errors. 

·         New Haven trailed the first set 21-20 before ripping off four points in a row, two on Rios kills to take a 24-21 lead. Ahead 24-22, Bussey finished the set off with a kill off a feed from Hacker.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 11 when they host Bloomfield in a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m.
