MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team took a one goal lead into halftime, but three early second half scores by Southern New Hampshire allowed the Penmen to upend the Chargers 3-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Saturday night. With the setback, New Haven is now 5-5-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in the NE-10.
Â
After the two teams were scoreless for the majority of the first half,
Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) broke the stalemate at the 37:46 mark. Â After his initial shot was stopped, the Penmen keeper was unable to fully collect the ball allowing Poirier to send the ricochet into the left side of the net.
Â
The lead stood until three minutes into the second half when Enzo Guiliani scored off a cross from Gilbert Manier to knot the match at 1-1. Following that goal, Southern New Hampshire scored twice more in the next 11 minutes to take a 3-1 lead.
Â
Undaunted, the Chargers climbed back to within a goal in the 83rd minute as
Ben Lamb (Keighley, England/Oakbank) notched his second goal of the season. He received a feed off a free kick from
Cam Twombly (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), redirecting the ball low into the net, slicing the advantage to 3-2. It was as close as the Blue and Gold would get, however, as the Penmen were able to hold on for the final seven minutes.
Â
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 11 when it travels to Albany, N.Y. to take on Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference match. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
