WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team played an even first half before a pair of second half tallies enabled the Merrimack Warriors to upend the Chargers 2-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Saturday afternoon. With the setback, New Haven is now 5-6-1 on the season overall with a 2-6-1 mark in the NE-10.
Â
The two teams played evenly in the first half with the Warriors holding a slight 8-7 edge in shots. Merrimack was able to drive seven of their attempts on target, but
Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) was up to the task, stopping all of them.
Â
In the second stanza, the Chargers came out with a relentless attack taking six shots, including three on goal in the first 14 minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Â
Just more than 20 minutes into the half, Merrimack countered on a New Haven ball into space. Mia Reed played the ball forward for Sarah Boucher who dribbled it through the middle and drove the ball from the top of the box into the left side of the net. Merrimack added a tally late to cement the final score.
Â
In goal, Nash made nine saves for the Blue and Gold.
Â
New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 when it travels to nationally ranked No. 4 Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference match. Kickoff from Easton, Mass. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
