Chargers Turn Up Defense in First Win of the Season

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort, limiting the Saint Rose Golden Knights to 33.3 percent shooting through the final three periods as the Chargers picked up their first win of the year, 68-57 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon. New Haven is now 1-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in the NE-10.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  •          Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) had a career-high 19 points in the contest to go along with seven rebounds. Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) also scored in double figures with 15 points.
  •          Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) had a strong overall game with eight points and career-highs with 11 rebounds and four blocks.
  •          The Chargers outscored Saint Rose 36-24 in the paint and 17-8 in bench points.
  •          The Blue and Gold held a 45-25 advantage in rebounds.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES:

  •          Saint Rose jumped out early, holding a 21-16 lead after one period.
  •          Cubbage led the Chargers with nine points in the frame while Kerr had four rebounds.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES:

  •         New Haven turned up the defensive pressure in the period, holding Saint Rose to 30 percent shooting and forced four turnovers.
  •          The Chargers outscored the Golden Knights 20-9 in the period.
  •          Sade King (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon / Hampton University) led the team with six points in the period while Wormack had five points and four rebounds.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES:

  •          Five different players scored for the Chargers.
  •          India Dotson (Akron, Ohio/Frederick (Md.) / Monmouth University) had four rebounds.
  •          New Haven extended to its largest lead of the period on a jumper by King to go up 43-30 at the 7:15 mark.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:

  •          The Blue and Gold shot 60 percent for the frame with Kerr netting 10 points.
  •          New Haven held Saint Rose to 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from the floor.
  •          The Chargers went 8-for-10 at the line to help seal the game.

UP NEXT:

New Haven returns to action at home on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. for a Northeast-10 contest against Adelphi.
