Men's Basketball Rallies in Second Half Before Falling to Owls

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team rallied from a 17-point first half deficit to take the lead midway through the second period, but the Chargers were upended by the Southern Connecticut State University Owls 73-63 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Wednesday night. New Haven is now 3-4 overall on the season with a 1-3 mark in the NE-10.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  •          Danny Upchurch (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) led the Chargers 18 points. He also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  •          Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) contributed with 17 points, adding a team-high five rebounds.
  •          For the game, the Blue and Gold committed a season low nine turnovers. 

FIRST HALF NOTES:

  •          Bailey led New Haven in the half, scoring nine points and pulling in three rebounds.
  •          Upchurch had eight points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal in the frame.
  •          The Chargers committed just five turnovers in the period, none in the first seven minutes.
  •          The Owls led 19-14 midway through the first half before going on a 16-4 run during the next 5:37 to open a 35-18 edge.
  •          New Haven responded, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to pull to within 37-28 with 1:37 left in the period. 

SECOND HALF NOTES:

  •          Trailing by 14 at halftime, the Blue and Gold opened the second half on a 24-6 run that spanned nearly 10 minutes, taking a 45-44 lead on a Bailey free throw and eventually extending to a 52-48 advantage on a Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) three-pointer.
  •          With New Haven holding a 55-52 lead at the 9:17 mark, Southern Connecticut went on a 15-2 run, capped by a Michael Mallory trey to open up a 67-57 advantage with 3:08 to go in the contest.  

UP NEXT:
The Chargers are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 4 when they host Pace. Tipoff from Charger Gymnasium is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
