Women's Basketball Upended by AIC

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team outscored the American International Yellow Jackets 18-5 in the third period, but a fourth quarter run allowed AIC to pull away with a 67-52 win in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Wednesday night.
 
With the victory, the Yellow Jackets improve to 18-4 overall and are 11-4 in the NE-10. New Haven is 10-11 with a 6-9 in conference play.
 
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) led the Chargers with 22 points and eight rebounds. Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) netted 18. Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) contributed with six points, seven boards, two assists and two blocks.
 
Both teams scored at will in the first period with the Blue and Gold leading 18-16 at the buzzer. Hebert led the way with seven points in the frame. The second quarter saw AIC tally the first 11 points before the Chargers responded to cut the deficit to 30-25 at halftime.
 
Opening the second half, New Haven went on an extended run, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 14-1 in the first 6:38 of the third period. They held AIC without a field goal during the spurt to take a 39-31 lead before carrying a 43-35 advantage into the fourth. After the two teams traded baskets to open the final stanza, American International used a 22-3 run to take a double digit lead and put the game away.
 
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 when it travels to Saint Rose for a Northeast-10 Conference tilt. Tipoff from Nolan Gymnasium in Albany, N.Y. is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
