WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The nationally ranked No. 6 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team used a 9-1 run midway through the second half to break open a tight game, winning 15-9 against the Assumption Greyhounds in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field.
The win improves the Chargers record to 3-2 and 1-0 in the NE-10. Assumption is 2-3 overall and is 0-2 in conference play.
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) led New Haven with seven points on the strength of four goals and three assists.
Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) had four goals and two assists while
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) recorded two goals each. Fisher and
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) each won four draw controls for New Haven.
After leading at halftime, the Chargers saw Assumption score two quick goals to knot the game at six less than five minutes into the second half. A timeout for the Blue and Gold started to turn the tide as Galler notched her first career goal off a feed from O'Brien at the 19:07 mark. Two and a half minutes later, Szymanski scored her second of the day to make it 8-6.
A tally by the Greyhounds on a free position attempt made it 8-7 at the midway point of the frame. From there, New Haven netted the next seven goals, two each by O'Brien and Szymanski, opening up a 15-7 lead during a nine-minute stretch to put the game away.
The first half was a tightly contested battle as neither team held more than a two goal lead. Assumption scored early to take leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before three straight tallies by the Chargers, the last of which coming on a strong individual effort by Fisher that put the Blue and Gold up 4-2. The teams traded a pair of goals heading into the break, giving the Chargers their 6-4 halftime lead.
For the game, New Haven outshot Assumption 35-24 and held a 14-12 edge in draw controls.
The Chargers return to action on Monday, March 21 when they travel to face cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State. Opening draw from Jess Dow Field is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.Â
