WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Led by a three-goal effort from senior Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), the No. 10 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-8 decision to the No. 1 Adelphi Panthers on Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the loss, New Haven falls to 8-4 on the season and 6-2 in the Northeast-10.
Fisher finished the afternoon with four points total, adding an assist to her team-best three goals. Joining her as the only other player with a multi-goal afternoon was senior Devon Previte (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) who finished with two goals. Two other players would each finish with two points as junior Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) added a goal and an assist and sophomore Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) tallied a pair of assists.
Also joining in the scoring efforts was junior Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and freshman Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) who each finished with a goal. Overall, the Chargers compiled 18 shots compared to 22 for the Panthers. New Haven placed 13 of their 18 shots on goal, while senior goalkeeper Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) finished with six saves between the pipes for the Blue and Gold.
The two squads would trade goals over the first six scores of the afternoon with the Panthers scoring the opening tally and New Haven matching that score just over a minute later when Fisher netted her first of the day off a feed from Mazliah.
Six minutes after Adelphi took a 2-1 advantage, the Chargers turned to Previte for her first goal of the day, tying the score at two with just under 10 minutes played. After the Panthers tallied their third goal of the game, Fisher found the back of the net for the Chargers third goal of the day with 14:20 remaining before the intermission.
The Panthers would go on to score the final six goals of the half and took a 9-3 lead into the break, extending that lead to 10-3 with the first goal of the new period two minutes in. The Chargers broke the Adelphi rally when Belanger connected with O'Brien at the 22:24 mark.
After two more goals for the Panthers, New Haven attempted to mount a late rally scoring the final four goals of the game and holding Adelphi off the scoreboard for the final 14:57.
Galler would provide the first score of the late Charger rally, connecting with Mazliah 1:20 after that final Adelphi goal. Previte added her second goal on a free position attempt with 11:44 remaining, but the Panthers would then hold UNH scoreless for a seven minute stretch. New Haven broke that scoring drought with goals from O'Brien and Fisher, while Fisher also assisted on O'Brien's tally, with both goals coming in the final five minutes.
The Chargers will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Saint Michael's. The late morning match is scheduled for an opening draw at 11:00 a.m.
