ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball team won game two of a doubleheader against the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon, clinching a berth in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The Chargers won the game 6-1 after falling 4-1 in the opening contest. New Haven is now 23-13 on the season.
Key Players:
- Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) went 5-for-7 with a double and two runs scored in the doubleheader.
- Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) had four hits each. Palase also had her seventh triple of the season, a mark that is tied for the NE-10 lead.
- Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) and Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) each had three hits and a home run.
- Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) won her league-leading 16th game of the season in game two, allowing one run on two hits, striking out eight.
- Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) took a tough luck loss in game one, surrendering just one earned run. Her eight strikeouts gave her 158 on the season, which leads the Northeast-10 and sets a new career-high.
How it Happened (Game One):
- Saint Rose scored three unearned runs in the first inning.
- The Golden Knights added to their lead in the fourth with a run to make it 4-0.
- New Haven cracked the scoreboard in the fifth when a double by Palase scored Devlin who singled to begin the frame.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- The Chargers opened the scoring in the second inning on a solo homer by Luzzi.
- New Haven added to the lead in the third when Luzzi singled home Colby who doubled to start a two–out rally.
- Saint Rose scored a run in the fourth to make it 2-1.
- The Blue and Gold put the game away in the fifth with three runs. With the bases loaded, Schiebe, Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and Devlin all singled to bring home three runs.
- Devlin capped the scoring with her third home run of the season in the seventh.
