Softball Upended by Saint Rose in Regular Season Finale

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball opened the scoring with a pair of first inning runs, but was upended 4-3 by the Saint Rose Golden Knights in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers are now 23-14 on the season.
 
Key Players:
  • Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) had three hits, a stolen base and scored two runs.
  • Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) continued her hot hitting with two hits.
  • Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) had a pair of hits in the contest and scored a run.
  • Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out four.
How it Happened:
  • The Chargers opened the scoring in the first inning as Palase and Whitlock each singled and stood on second and third when Luzzi singled the pair home.
  • Saint Rose tallied two runs each in the second and third, taking a 4-2 lead.
  • The Blue and Gold pulled a run closer in the fifth as with two outs Palase singled and stole second before scoring on an error.
By the Numbers:
  • King finished the regular season with 162 strikeouts to lead the NE-10 and set a career-high. Her 1.50 ERA is third in the conference.
  • Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) now has 28 RBI, ninth in the Northeast-10. It is the most RBI for a New Haven freshman since Lindsey Couturier had 30 in 2011.

New Haven is the fourth seed in the NE-10 Southwest Division will play at third seeded Adelphi in the First Round in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y. The winner of the game will advance to the NE-10 Championship weekend to play Northeast Division second seed Stonehill on Thursday afternoon.
