WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) threw the first complete game of his college career, but the University of New Haven baseball team surrendered a pair of unearned runs as the Chargers fell to the Le Moyne Dolphins 2-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game on Friday afternoon. New Haven is now 15-20 overall and 8-12 in conference.
Â
Both starting pitchers were excellent in the contest. Aprea did not allow a hit in his final seven innings of work, throwing eight frames overall. He gave up two hits and no earned runs, striking out six. Sam Walsh allowed one run on four hits through seven innings for the Dolphins.
Â
Le Moyne scored a run in the first as with two runners on, Nick Place grounded a ball to
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) at third. His throw to second was on time, but the relay throw went past the first baseman allowing the runner on second to score for a 1-0 Dolphins lead.
Â
New Haven tied the game in the fourth as
Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) led off with a single, followed by walks to
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Zagaja to load the bases. On the first pitch he saw,
TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) lifted a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Russo on the sac fly.
Â
The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the eighth when a pair of runners reached for Le Moyne on errors. The Dolphins then executed a squeeze bunt to score the eventual winning run.
Â
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, May 7 when they host the Saint Rose Golden Knights in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at Frank Vieira Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Prior to the game, there will be a ceremony honoring the three seniors on the baseball team.Â
