Women's Soccer Wins Season Opener 2-0

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Danielle Widmann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and Sarah Bosco (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) scored 17 minutes apart, bridging halftime, as the University of New Haven women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 win against Queens on Thursday afternoon at Kayo Field.

Key Players

·                  Danielle Widmann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) came off the bench and scored her the first goal of the season for the Chargers while registering four shots.

·                  Sarah Bosco (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) netted her first career goal early in the second half.

·                  Sierra Stein (Sherman, Conn./Immaculate), Rachel Dempsey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and Nicole Caruso (Portland, Conn./Portland) each had an assist.

·                  Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made three saves in the shutout victory.


How it Happened

·         The Chargers got on the board in the 30th minute when Stein delivered a free kick into the box from 35 yards out. Dempsey headed the ball to the middle of the box where Widmann was able to drive it into the back of the net.

·         Early in the second half Carlie Schecht (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) served a ball from the left flank. Caruso headed it across the box to Bosco who was able to touch the ball past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

·          Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made two sterling second half saves to preserve the victory.


Turning Point

·         Despite outshooting the Knights 10-0, the Chargers didn't crack the scoreboard until Widmann delivered in the 30th minute. The goal turned out to be the eventual game winner.


By the Numbers

·         New Haven outshot Queens 23-5 in the contest, including 12-0 in the first half.

·         The Chargers held a 12-4 edge in shots on goal.

·         Bosco's goal was the first of her career in her first collegiate match after sitting out last season with an injury.

·         New Haven has a short turnaround as they travel to Long Island to take on NYIT in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m.
