Late Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to Road Victory

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Rachel Dempsey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored off a corner kick with less than five minutes remaining in the second half to lift the University of New Haven women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at NYIT on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers are now 2-0-0 on the season.

Key Players

·         Dempsey recorded three points in the contest on the strength of a goal and an assist.

·         Allison Morgan (Raritan, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) netted her first goal of the season for the Blue and Gold.

·         Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made three saves for New Haven.

How it Happened

·         Neither team scored in the first half with the Chargers outshooting the Bears 7-4 including 3-2 in attempts on target.

·         As it did in the opener, New Haven scored in the first three minutes of the second half as Morgan tallied her first of the season, taking a cross from Dempsey and touched the ball past the keeper from three yards out.

·         NYIT tied the match just 10 minutes later when Taylor Davide chipped the ball into the net off a turnover.

·         Dempsey broke the tie as she scored on a loose ball in the mixer on a corner kick sent in by Sorcha Ni Bhraonain (Galway, Ireland/Colaiste Cholmcille).

Turning Point

·         After the two teams spent all but 10 minutes in the contest tied, Dempsey's goal in the 86th minute proved to be the game-winning tally.

By the Numbers

·         The Chargers outshot the Bears 15-7 for the match.

·         The two teams were even with four corner kicks each.
