SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team took an early lead, but was handed a 2-1 overtime setback by the American International Yellow Jackets in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Saturday evening. The Chargers are now 3-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in NE-10 play.

New Haven opened the scoring in the 21st minute as
Danielle Matassa (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown North) netted her first goal of the season to make it 1-0. The Chargers carried the lead into halftime with neither team registering many offensive chances as only three shots were taken in the first period.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets were the aggressor, recording several early shots, all of which were either turned aside by
Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) or missed the target. The lead held until the 71st minute when Frederica Frew found the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.

In overtime, New Haven had a late chance as in the 98th minute,
Danielle Widmann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) sent a shot over the crossbar. With less than a minute left, AIC ended the game as Stephanie Tweer scored the final tally.

Despite the setback, Nash made nine saves in the contest.

New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when it hosts Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Conference match. Opening kick at Kayo Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
