WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 72nd minute as the Chargers downed the Saint Michael's Purple Knights in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Kayo Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, New Haven is 4-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in NE-10 play.
KEY PLAYERS
· Both Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Megan Georges (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) netted goals for New Haven. For Georges it was the first of her career.
· Allison Morgan (Raritan, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) notched her team-leading third assist of the season.
· Kyra Wolonsavich (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) came on in relief and made two saves, earning her first career win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· Scoreless into the 39th minute, Morgan took a ball down the left side and centered it for Georges who collected and banged the ball into the back of the net for her first career goal and a 1-0 New Haven lead.
· In the 52nd minute the Purple Knights tied it when Sarah Williams drove a ball from midfield to the top of the box where Allegra DiCesare ran onto it and beat the keeper to the ball, tapping it home to knot the score at 1-1.
· The Chargers scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute when Morello won the ball off a turnover, dribbled into the box and struck it into the lower left corner.
BY THE NUMBERS
· New Haven held a 27-11 advantage in shots for the contest, but just 6-5 in shots on goal.
· The Chargers had seven corners to the Purple Knights three.
· Saint Michael's was offsides four times in the match.
