Chargers Score 48-21 Victory at Pace for Second Straight Victory

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven football team scored 38 unanswered points in the first half and never looked back, defeating the Pace Setters 48-21 to improve to 2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers were led by seniors Rishawn Harris (Springfield, Mass./Putnam Vocational Technical Academy), Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) and Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) who all finished with a pair of touchdowns on the day.

Patterson closed out the day with his second straight 300-plus yard game, finishing with 319 yards on 19 completions. Included in his two touchdown passes was a 61-yard connection with Harris, the sixth TD pass of the season of 45 yards or more.

Harris led all Chargers receivers with 78 yards, one of three players to finish with 70 or more. He was joined by Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) and Anderson who finished with 75 and 70 yards respectively. Anderson closed out the day with 64 yards on the ground, second most on the team. Leading the ground efforts was freshman Ryan McCarthy (Montclair, N.J./Bergen Catholic) who closed out the day with 72 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to six extra points, junior kicker Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge / Buffalo State) hit a pair of field goals of 28 and 26 yards, while also averaging 42 yards on a pair of punts. Defensively, the Chargers were led by Stefano Bicknese (Somers, N.Y./Somers / USMAPS) and Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) who each finished with six tackles.

STATISTICAL LEADERS

·         Senior Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) passed for 319 yards, his second straight game with 300 or more yards and seven yards shy of his career high. He closed out the day completing 19 of 27 passes with a pair of touchdowns.

·         The Chargers relied on five different running backs with freshman Ryan McCarthy (Montclair, N.J./Bergen Catholic) leading the team, collecting 72 yards on nine carries. He also ran in one of the Chargers six touchdowns.

·         Senior running back Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) closed out his day with 63 net yards on 17 carries, ending a pair of drives with five yard and one yard runs for scores. He also finished with 70 yards on four receptions.  

·         Leading a host of wide receivers who were targeted against Pace was senior Rishawn Harris (Springfield, Mass./Putnam Vocational Technical Academy) who in three catches racked up 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Included in his two scores was a 61 yard connection with Patterson.

·         Overall, three Chargers finished with 70 or more yards in the air with Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) and Anderson joining Harris with 75 and 70 yards respectively.

·         Junior kicker Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge / Buffalo State) finished a perfect 6-of-6 in point after attempts and drilled a pair of field goals straight down the middle for 28 and 26 yards. He also averaged 42 yards on two punts.

·         Defensively, the Chargers were led by Stefano Bicknese (Somers, N.Y./Somers / USMAPS) and Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) who each finished with six tackles. Condit's six tackles pushed him into second all-time with 380 career stops.

HIGHLIGHTS

·         The Chargers opened up the game scoring on each of its first two drives with Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge / Buffalo State) drilling a 28-yard field goal and Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) completing a 58-yard drive with a one yard keeper, giving the Blue and Gold a 10-0 early lead.

·         Senior Rishawn Harris (Springfield, Mass./Putnam Vocational Technical Academy) would go back-to-back for the next two Charger touchdowns, connecting with Patterson for 61-yard and 12-yard scores to push the UNH lead to 24-0 with less than five minutes played in the second quarter.

·         New Haven would extend their lead to 38-0 before the end of the half thanks to a pair of TD's from Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) on one and five yard runs. Defensively, the Chargers held Pace to just 53 total yards and one first down in the first quarter.

·         The Blue and Gold would again score on their first two drives in the second half, the first on a 26-yard field goal by Stock and the second on a Ryan McCarthy (Montclair, N.J./Bergen Catholic) four yard touchdown.

·         Offensively, the Chargers went for distance all day long with all five receivers used in the game completing a catch of at least 22 yards and five different running backs finishing off runs of 12 yards or more.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

·         Senior Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) moved up one spot on the all-time tackles list, finishing the game with six total stops. That moved him one tackle past Rick Racioppi into second on the list. He is now 43 tackles shy of taking over as the all-time leader.

·         The win against Pace represents the first road victory of the season for UNH and keeps the Blue and Gold undefeated against the Setters in eight total match-ups.

·         The 48 points by New Haven is two points shy of the Chargers average against the Setters all-time in the series. Entering today's game, UNH was averaging 50.4 points against Pace.

·         With the 61 yard touchdown pass to Rishawn Harris (Springfield, Mass./Putnam Vocational Technical Academy) in the first quarter, Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) has now thrown six touchdowns of 45 or more yards and at least one in all four games.

·         Harris closed out the game with two touchdowns against Pace, which puts him with at least one TD in each of his four meetings against the Setters.

The Chargers return to DellaCamera Stadium for a rivalry game as UNH begins a new month with the Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Saturday, October 1. The Blue and Gold are looking to secure their seventh straight Elm City Cup when the Owls visit West Haven. That game will also serve as Family Day sponsored by the Army ROTC. Kick off at DellaCamera is slated for 1:00 p.m.
