WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) scored in the 98th minute as the University of New Haven men's soccer team claimed a 2-1 overtime victory against the Assumption Greyhounds in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Saturday afternoon. With the win, New Haven is now 4-2-1 overall with a 1-2-1 record in conference play.
KEY PLAYERS
· Poirier scored both goals in the match for New Haven.
· Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) made a career-high 11 saves.
· Cam Twombly (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) assisted on both of New Haven's goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· Less than 14 minutes into the first half, Poirier collected a ball just outside of the top of the box and struck into the lower left corner for his fourth goal of the season.
· Assumption regrouped at halftime and got the equalizing tally on a goal by Simon Trcka that was served through from Jason Lages.
· Poirier ended the contest in the eighth minute of overtime when he took a pass from Twombly at the top left corner of the box, collected and was able to beat the Greyhounds' keeper to the far side for the game-winner.
BY THE NUMBERS
· It was the first overtime victory for New Haven since Oct. 20, 2012 when they defeated then No. 15 Southern New Hampshire 2-1 in Manchester, N.H.
· Each team took 21 shots in the contest.
· It was Poirier's second career multi-goal match, equaling his effort from Sept. 6, 2015 in a 3-1 win against Holy Family.
