Men's Soccer Downs Felician for Second Win in a Row

WEST HAVEN, Conn.
– The University of New Haven men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the final 40 minutes and Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) delivered his second straight clean sheet as the Chargers downed the Felician Golden Falcons 2-0 at Kayo Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, New Haven is now 2-0-0. 


Key Players

·                  Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) scored for the second time in as many games..

·                  Cam Twombly (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) netted his first career goal.

·                  Lorusso made two saves in his second straight shutout to open his career.


How it Happened

·         Lorusso kept the match scoreless midway through the first half, making a diving save off a shot by Kenny Monfort.

·       The Blue and Gold cracked the scoreboard just more than five minutes into the second half when Poirier knocked home a header off a perfect feed from Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) for his second goal of the season.

·         New Haven put the game away in the 84th minute when Cam Twombley collected a loose ball in the box and sent it into the lower left corner for his first collegiate goal. 


Turning Point

·         After the two teams played evenly in the first half, the Chargers took charge in the second frame with Poirier's goal proving to be the difference.


By the Numbers

·         The Blue and Gold held a 15-8 advantage in shots including 12-2 in the second half.

·         New Haven took eight corner kicks in the match.


Up Next

·         The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they take on Georgian Court in a non-conference match. Kickoff from Kayo Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
