Men's Soccer Erupts for Six Second Half Goals to Down Georgian Court

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team posted its highest goal total in nearly three seasons, with all of the tallies coming in the second half as the Chargers downed the Georgian Court Lions 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. The six goals set a Kayo Field record for men's soccer and improved New Haven to 3-0-0 for the second consecutive season.

KEY PLAYERS

·         Five different players scored for the Chargers as Mason Rivera (Preston, Conn./Norwich Free Academy), Rob Poirier (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme), Mohamed Djalo (Bissau, Guinea-Bissau/New Rochelle (N.Y.)), Evans Kussi (Udine, Italy/Doherty Memorial) and Oscar Johannesson (Hässleholm, Sweden/Hässleholms Tekniska Skola) each found the back of the net.

·         The opening New Haven goal of the match were the first career points for Rivera.

·         Djalo's markers were the first tallies of his career.

·         The current Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, Poirier, scored in his third consecutive match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

·         The Blue and Gold fell behind early as Georgian Court scored the only two goals of the first half.

·         New Haven rallied to tie the contest on goals by Rivera and Poirier in the 48th and 59th minutes.

·         After the Lions took a 3-2 lead at the 60:15 mark, the Chargers tied the contest 40 second later on Djalo's first score of the match.

·         New Haven scored three goals in a matter of 10 minutes starting at the 72:42 mark, coming from Kussi, Djalo and Johannesson, the final tally coming on a PK.

TURNING POINT

·         Shortly after tying the match, the Chargers conceded a goal that put GCU up 3-2. Less than a minute later, New Haven regained the momentum with Djalo's first goal of the match. The Blue and Gold didn't look back from there, scoring the final four goals en route to the victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

·         The six goals New Haven scored were its most since Sept. 28, 2013 when it defeated Saint Anselm 6-3. They were the most tallies in a game by men's soccer at Kayo Field, eclipsing the four the Chargers scored on Oct. 4, 2008 against American International and Sept. 13, 2014 against Felician.

·         The last time the Chargers tallied six or more goals in one half was on Sept. 18, 2000 when they scored eight in the opening frame against St. Thomas Aquinas.

·         Eight different players registered a point for the Blue and Gold.

·         New Haven held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second half.
