WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) netted a career-high 13 points to go along with eight rebounds, but the University of New Haven women's basketball team fell to the Stonehill Skyhawks 58-49 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Tuesday afternoon. The afternoon contest was in conjunction with the fifth annual Class at the Court event.
All 12 of New Haven's points during the first period came from Oge and Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) as the Chargers (2-12, 1-8 NE10) trailed 17-12 at the end of the opening stanza. A defensive battle ensued in the second quarter as heading into halftime, Stonehill (7-7, 6-4 NE10) held a 26-19 advantage.
The Skyhawks started to pull away in the third, taking a 38-23 lead with 3:24 remaining. The two squads played evenly for the rest of the frame before New Haven's offense woke up in the fourth period. Forcing eight Skyhawk turnovers, the Chargers outscored Stonehill 20-16 in the quarter with Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) going off for 16 points. Chipping away, the Blue and Gold sliced the lead to 52-45 on a Kerr layup with 2:30 to go in the game. The Skyhawks salted the contest away, hitting their final two field goals and connecting on a pair of free throws.
Prior to the game, the women's basketball team hosted their annual Class at the Court, bringing nearly 500 fourth graders from West Haven elementary schools to campus. The event is designed to engage the students in math, language arts and science while giving them an introduction to a college campus.
